Pediatricians double vitamin D recommendations.  Here's the article: http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20081013/ap_on_he_me/med_vitamin_d_kids

In my opinion they should have printed their last paragraph first!  We really have to protect our families with the knowledge we've gleaned from the MP folks.

I am getting so tired of all the conflicts of interest that seem to be so pervasive everywhere I look....You are so right, Toni....that last paragraph should be in capital letters....It's very discouraging to see how people are so easily led and don't think for themselves at all. The writer of this article should have said..."Say, what?..me thinks I'll look into this connection."...now there would be an article worthy of writing"

Dr. Mercola is at it again!  Recommending supplementation of Vitamin D.  In another link I just watched, Dr. Mercola is selling his very own in home tanning bed.  I've attached this link below.

What did I find particularily interesting from this video clip???  Dr. Mercola begins his talk with--"Cancer has surpassed heart disease in the last two years as the #1 killer."  Stressing the fact that we are not getting enough sun and need more Vitamin D.  The media keeps promoting Vitamin D, doubling the requirements for kids, putting in more additives and YET people are getting sicker and cancer has taken over????  So let me understand this properly, we're consuming more Vitamin D and getting sicker???!

http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2002/02/23/vitamin-d-deficiency-part-one.aspx

EDIT by Deb:

From the same video above, the following information is included!!!!

People Who Should Avoid Vitamin D

If you have sarcoidosis, tuberculosis, or lymphoma, it would be best for you to avoid oral vitamin D supplementation based on this test. It is recommended that you perform the 1,25(OH)D test before you supplement with any sun exposure or oral vitamin D as it is a better indicator in people with this health challenge.

As for Dr Mercola touting a tanning bed, it has something to do with "where the sun don't shine", but I can't remember the exact phrase just now...;)

Yes, I'd read Mercola for many yrs & had even recommended it to others.  Now, I really wish I could un-recommend that website.  Well I have, with the friends I can remember.  LOL :P

Also, my LLMD had recommended that I use a Far Infra red sauna. I bought one in 2001, but each summer had to stop using it - due to feeling so sick. Thank you Dr Marshall for figuring out why I felt so bad...no one else could. Anyone want a Far IR sauna?

Sitting in a sauna also has something to do with...."where the sun don't shine".

Thanks Knochen for the visual aid!

There is a lot of un-learning (and learning MP:)), but geeeee does it feel good!

  ~Martha

Martha,

You may be able to unload the sauna on craigslist and recoup some of your money for MP needs.  Just a thought:).

Martha,

I also have a far infra red sauna -- Maybe we could find someone who wants a pair????:D

Truly there is alot to learn/unlearn and experience in a life time.

Life is a blessing the challenges just bring that out more. Thankfully God never changes.

Very good thoughts, Toni & Sue. I had thought of Craig's list, just need to follow thru.

You are so right Sue, Life is full of challenges...thank goodness or I'd still be using my sauna & taking handfuls of supplements to try and feel a little better. Yes, God is consistent and sometimes it takes a big blow to redirect a person.

It bothers me with all the various propaganda pathways being given regarding health, especially to our children. Thank goodness for this site & Dr Marshall and his MP pioneers. I know there are many hours volunteered to maintain our ability to find true health.

We've all taken a Leap of Faith to be here. Contrary to what we still read & hear. :) ~ Martha

Hello all!

This weekend was spent with a favorite aunt of mine in Louisville---She is pretty familiar with all that I'm doing on the MP with light avoidance, Vitamin D avoidance and meds.  Her doctor recently put her on a Vitamin D script, yes an actual script for gel caps.  As she was reading through the warnings that are included with all drugs, it is noted for this Vitamin D script: NOT TO USE VITAMIN D AS A SUPPLEMENT IF YOU HAVE SARCOIDOSIS, LEUKEMIA OR LYMPHOMA.  It is good to see this kind of progress, although look at all of the Th1 diseases that are not being represented in these warnings.:X  Of course a big issue for all those who are unaware of their th1 disease.

Interestingly, my aunt has lupus and sjogrens---I'm hoping that she will at some point committ to the MP as she has had ill health for years.  But let's think about this---One of the things she has done for many years with the lupus issue is avoid the sun at all costs.  She is very fair skinned and when we've done sun vacations, has always stayed indoors or covered when she ventures out!  Never would I have guessed years ago that I would be following in her footsteps....So now after all these years of avoiding the sun, her current doctor is putting her on Vitamin D supplementation.  We talked about this and she is going to talk to the doctor on her next visit......Doesn't make a lot of sense now does it?  She told me she hadn't even made the connection herself until we started talking about it!:?

Deb,

What is it, exactly, that doctors give as the reason that lupus patients need to avoid the sun?  I know they are supposed to, but I guess I don't know why.  Also, people on Mino are supposed to avoid the sun, but it is usually told to them that they will burn easier.  Why is that?  For years I was on various ABX for "adult acne" and I didn't really feel all that more sensitive to the sun, but the color of my tan kind of changed over time.  Weird stuff.

They do seem to give mixed messages, don't they?

This information was posted on a Sarc support site by one of our MP members.  It is an Excel spreadsheet of over 1800 foods which contain Vitamin D.   These are all listed in order of Vitamin D content.  Obviously, fish, milk and eggs are in the first 150 listings!   I thought this to be very good information!  This member also mentioned that mother's breast milk does not contain D!!!!  Thanks Pat!:dude:

Footnote:  Salmon, tuna and halibut are in the top 25.  These were the three foods that I had increased in my diet within the three-four months before I became so ill, two years ago.  Once I learned about Vitamin D from the MP site, I knew immediately the connection to my illness.  By ingesting such large amounts of D, I had put an unusually high strain on my already low functioning body.  If you would like a copy of this---Highlight the listings below and print from your computer.  Good resource!

Nutrient Reports Per Reasonable Portion Size  IMPORTANT NOTE:  D LEVEL IS PER SERVING SIZE

Excellent, Deb. DId you get the Excel file as well as the PDF? We can put it online as a reference, if so...

Remember that 5 micrograms is 200IU (which is 200IU too much :))

Also, there is an interesting paper describing fortification in the US and Canada at URL:

So the math says... (and who eats it raw, I'd like to know!) ... any amount is too much!

Did they say how they determined the amounts?

*Now that I look at these values, I cannot believe the amounts of salmon I was eating. :X:X:X These values for salmon are close to cod liver oil which is 4.5X the recommended daily allowance for Vitamin D and in my case 4.5X too much!

Ok, I don't know where the original page was posted, but I copied this chart from the FAQs when I first got started on the MP 14 months ago. Maybe we can figure out where the math went wrong...
Food Sources of Vitamin D
USDA databases compiled in the 1980s list the following foods as rich in vitamin D. The amounts given are for 100 grams or about 3 1/2 ounces.
                                   IU D

Cod Liver Oil                    10,000
Lard (Pork Fat)                   2,800
Atlantic Herring (Pickled)          680
Eastern Oysters (Steamed)           642
Catfish (Steamed/Poached)           500
Skinless Sardines (Water Packed)    480
Mackerel (Canned/Drained)           450
Smoked Chinook Salmon               320
Sturgeon Roe                        232
Shrimp (Canned/Drained)             172
Egg Yolk (Fresh)                    148
Butter                               56
Lamb Liver (Braised)                 20
Beef Tallow                          19
Pork Liver (Braised)                 12
Beef Liver (Fried)                   12
Beef Tripe (Raw)                     12
Beef Kidney (Simmered)               12
Chicken Livers (Simmered)            12
Small Clams (Steamed/Cooked Moist)    8
Blue Crab (Steamed)                   4
Crayfish/Crawdads (Steamed)           4
Northern Lobster (Steamed)             4

One egg yolk is              approximately  24 IU
One tablespoon of butter is  approximately   6 IU

old chart says: 1 egg yolk is approx. 24 IU (1ug=40IU)

this database says:
127
Egg, chicken, yolk, fresh, raw
4 egg yolks
68.00
2.516

68.00 x 2.516 divided by 4 is 43ug =>
so for eggs...

edit1: arg... I've got mixed units...

edit2: maybe the values aren't multiplied...
so, what if it's 2.516 ug * 40 / 4 = 25 IU  ... ahhhh... beautiful mathematics!

Comment by TM: Indeed, those nutrient values are per serving, no multiplication needed :)

Ok, I have gone over the Health Canada database you linked to Deb, and this is the main thing to remember... we are trying to stay below about 20 IU per day (D in our food) and 20 IU is the same as 0.5 µg... so, any foods above 0.5 µg in this chart are the ones to carefully avoid. :)

All the data can be found in this PDF file:
