What about a place to post ways WE can help others?  I find with being ill, that sometimes the only way to get my mind off of what I am suffering with, is to help someone else.  This is a thread where we can post different ideas to support others.  Writing to military, raising funds through emails, etc.

Please do not post any sites that are requesting monetary donations as this could be misused or may be difficult to validate.

This first post is a simple way to help feed "Hungry America"...and we are hungry in many areas of the country!

Be well....Deb:D:cool:

Hunger is a struggle for 1 in 8 Americans.  General Mills is supporting a Pound for Pound Challenge and you can help in a couple different ways.  One is to pledge to lose weight by signing up at PFPChallenge.com.  Now, for most of us, this may not be an option to be dieting as we work through our treatment on the MP but you may have friends or family who would be interested.  Copy and paste this in an email if you wish to share with others.

The second way is to clip and mail in Pound for Pound seals from any General Mills product that you would normally purchase in your home.  FOR EVERY SEAL RECEIVED BY 12/31/2009, GENERAL MILLS WILL DONATE 10 CENTS TO FEEDING AMERICANS..UP TO $275K MAXIMUM DONATION.  10 CENTS FOLKS, WILL PROVIDE ONE POUND OF GROCERIES TO A LOCAL FOOD BANK!

The mailing address is on each General Mills item, but I will include

Pound for Pound Challenge  PO Box 400013  El Paso, TX  88540-0013

I've started an envelope to save my seals and will update with my own progress!

Great idea, Deb!  Thanks for sharing/caring.  A cause like this actually helps one with personal development and some of us can really use that.

God has His way of providing, taking care of all  ....just love Him ...and you too:D

Although I am not up to doing this, a disabled friend of mine in another community contacts local organizations that she is interested in and raises goods and services for them for goods and services auctions.  She is exceptionally talented in this area and when she gets well may look into working in the field of development.  At any rate, this is something she can do that she enjoys from home.  I just thought this idea might appeal to others.

Claire

P.S.  I am knitting scarves and plan to learn how to knit hats and sweaters for the homeless and poor.  I plan to use my spending money to purchase supplies and knit throughout the year.  Since December, I've knitted over a dozen scarves.

My mind drops into knitting also.  Most local hospitals, women's shelters, homeless shelters and new immigrant centres can use donations of afghans, blankets, and clothing.

I know a woman who sews dog and cat quilts and gives them to the SPCA.

Juanita,

Knitting blankets reminded me of the knotted blankets that my daughter makes.  That would be a nice fall project for us....They are made of the fleece and take little time to make as they are just layered with two pieces of fleece, cut the edges, knot and go!

Thanks for a nice suggestion!

My daughter and I went to Sam's Club after a doctor's appointment  when I was at my worst and I clung to the basket just trying to wait for her to pick up a couple things.  While I was standing I saw this fleece blanket that was just beckoning me to cuddle up with it, so I bought it!...that blanket is still on my bed and reminds me so much of the comfort it gave when I spent 24/7 in bed.  I would curl up with that fleece blanket and it was as if the world was lifted from my shoulders!  There is something unbelievably cozy about fleece...maybe those fleece blankets would cheer others up as well!

If you would all please take a moment and reflect on the life of a little five year old girl, named Naveah (Heaven spelled backwards) Buchanan.  Naveah has been on national news and is from my hometown of Monroe.  A small community of 25,000, this story has hit the very core of all who live here.

Naveah went missing a couple weeks ago and was found this last week buried in a shallow grave along the river by a couple of fishermen.  Two suspects are being held in connection with her death, who are accquaintences of Naveah's mother and both sex offenders.

It has been heartwrenching to watch this unfold so close to home.  Five years old, so much life yet to live...As Nancy Grace publicly announced on TV...

God Bless Naveah...

that is so thoughtful, Claire
I learned to knit at school in my ten thumbed way, as the teachers had us all knit squares to a certain size which the seniors sewed up into blankets for donation. We also were invited and usually had a shot at visiting the sick in a children's hospital.

I have no calling to any occupation related to those teaching initiatives, but how brilliant. Without any preaching whatsoever I seem to have 'always' known (unlike some chronic whingers I have contact with) that however bad my situation in life, compared with huge numbers of people I am in heaven already.

p.s. socks are really tricky, even my mother the maker only knit bed socks....
but they are the one thing in my overly huge collection of garments that ever wears out, and when I think about it
1) homeless or displaced people do more walking than most
2) cold feet are as likely to keep me awake nights as herx
uh-oh, getting carried away again (there were preachers hanging about in my family tree)

Deb,

I read the named Neveah and it made me jump thinking it was my granddaughter, but she is 3yrs old. She had a stroke at 17months, was born premature with a quarter size hemangioma on the back of her leg. I was taking care of her prior to that; before I was on the MP.  She is living with foster parents, so I have'nt been able to see her.

Debz:(

My MP doctor is deeply involved with Haiti.  He has been raising funds for years and built a school, put in a water system, taken donations of glasses, etc and makes frequent trips there as a humanitarian.  If anyone is interested in donating to help the current issue in Haiti but not sure where they would like to send their donations,  Please PM me and I will get this info out to you!
