Ah, the healing power of music.  I too like others on the Quotes thread can hardly wait for a Susan Boyle album. Susan @ >> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lBTVdnWj1hM&feature=bz303

What else do you listen to when the IP is high and the bugs slowly die?  I would love to know what you listen to and why you like it.

My most played on my ipod is the Byrds - Turn Turn Turn (To Everything There is a Season), wonderful tune and the lyrics express the seasons and ebbs and flows of human experience so well.  Reminds me to hang in there a la Barney (another great souce of comfort and inspiration).

Capercaillie (Scottish group, very accomplished) - Waiting for the Wheel to Turn; You Will Rise Again; Grace and Pride; Dr MacPhail's Reel and many others.  Inspirational and uplifting.

Roy Orbison - such a tender voice, specially Only the Lonely, for those IP moments when you know you just have to have a good cry!  And the next track is You Got It, which lifts me right up again.

The classical guitar music of John Williams and Julian Bream.

Diane Arkenstone - the Healing Spirit

I could go on and on - but I would love to expand my current repertoire, so please share your absolute favourites!

PS A re-write of the lyrics to 'I've got you under my skin' would make it very MP apt!  If Frank was singing 'I don't want you to be a part of me' it would be a real ode to the bugs!!

I'm a highly eclectic listener.  I listen to far more than this, but these are ones I often pull up when I'm feeling down.  The music is from another era, and has actual melody! The radio shows are just as entertaining now as they ever were.  Something to pass the time with a story.  Enjoy!

Yup, music is great isn't it...My daughter hooked me up to this online radio station http://www.pandora.com where you create your very own sounds, artists and recordings... It is pretty awesome...Example:  I requested Michael Buble and get artists and songs from him and others that are similar.  It saves my settings so that when I go back I can choose what sounds I feel like at that moment.

Check it out...Enjoy!  Deb

Here are the contents of my 1GB Creative Nano MP3 player which plays continuously anytime I need to relax or sleep :) Basic selection has not changed much over the last decade. Roughly in Alphabetic order.

1. AC/DC - Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap - Australian version of Album, not the expurgated US version

2. Eagles. Hell Freezes Over (DVD soundtrack)

3. Elton John - Live at Ephesus (DVD soundtrack)

4. Elton John - 'Live in Australia' (one or two over-exuberant tracks are removed)
(Does anybody have a DVD version of this old concert? I was only able to buy the CD)

5. Heart - Dog and Butterfly - Butterfly section only

6. Heart - Live in Seattle - DVD soundtrack

7. Slim Dusty - 'Henry Lawson and Banjo Patterson'

8. Jethro Tull - Aqualung

9. Kate Wolf - Give yourself to love, volumes 1 and 2

10. Meat Loaf - Bat out of Hell (tracks reordered to put BOOH as the final track, which is how it was recorded by the artist)

11. Pink Floyd - Animals

12. Pink Floyd - Dark side of the Moon Live (partial 'Pulse' DVD soundtrack)

13. Pink Floyd - Wish you were Here

14. Ralph McTell - 'Albert and Sydney'

15. Roger Waters - 'In the Flesh' (DVD soundtrack)

16. Status Quo - 'If you can't stand the Heat' - omitted some tracks

17. Uriah Heep - The Magician's Birthday Party Live - 2002 DVD soundtrack

18. Warren Zevon - A Quiet Restful Life (edited)

19. Yes - Yessongs (edited)

Let's see, on the flight from Prague to Atlanta, I started with Eagles, which looped endless times while I slept for about 3/4 of the 10 hour flight. When I woke I played Status Quo, and a bit of Kate Wolf. From Atlanta to LAX I started with 'Bat out of Hell', and immediately dozed through the drinks service - then selected 'Live in Australia' for looping while I was sleeping for most of the flight. Warren Zevon then took over for the last hour or so...

I use the tiny Sennheiser CX 400 HiFi earplugs with the Comply T-400 Foam Tips to exclude all outside sounds :)

Nothing but the best where my music is concerned :) :) Music helped get  me through decades of disease. Harry Potter audiobooks (the Jim Dale series) were a great help getting through the early days of the MP :)

Wow! How neat! All these new ways to access music, and what a selection!

Thanks everyone.

Dr Marshall, thanks for the earphone info.   I think I'll make a decent set of earpieces my next reward for MP diligence!

Hmmm, Neutral Milk Hotel has to be my favorite.  It helps me know that there is way more out there to know than we can begin to grasp... yet we must try.  Hence, poetry... oh and molecular biology.

:cool:dette

edited to say, this is not "feel-good" music.  It's music to let you know you are alive, that the human condition involves the unexplained, and we should revel in our individuality.   And perhaps it is the music of the wounded.

Willie Nelson's Stardust Memories CD is a particularly relaxing listen.

Cheryl Wheeler and Tracy Chapman make me feel good.

Bonnie Raitt puts a little rhythm and blues in to my life.

Candy Dulfer adds a little funk.

And I like to "rock out" to Little Feat.

Most of all, I love Keb Mo.

Dearest Dr. Marshall,

Where can I send you a copy of this 'Live in Australia'  DVD? Is it the 1984 concert? I would love to be able to do this little thing for you! Please just let me know!

All the music listed is amazing, especially Dr. M's List! I also like the blues and Marvin Gaye to pump me up! I took liberties with one of his songs which I sing all the time, so sharing again-

Let's Get it Gone

I've been really tryin, MP’ers
Tryin to hold back these symptoms for so long
And if you feel, like I feel MP’ers
Come on, oh come on,

Let's get it gone
Lets get it gone
Let's get it gone
Let's get it gone

We're all sufferin people
With so much life to live, understand me MP’ers
Since we want to be
MP says, take your meds

There's nothin wrong with me reachin out to all of you
And givin ourselves a chance to live can never be wrong
The Marshall Protocol is true

Don't you know how sweet and wonderful, life can be
I'm askin you MP’ers, to get it gone with me
I aint gonna worry, I aint gonna push
So come on, come on, come on, come on MP’ers
Stop Eatin D, Cover up, follow directions and get off your tush....

Let's get it gone
Let's get it gone
Let's get it gone
Let's get it gone

Love and health to you all!

Patsysweeney, yes, it is the concert (circa 1985) with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra just before Elton had the operation on his voice. I love the way he tries so hard with his voice-production because it is so close to breaking. Elton often seems to lack "trying hard" but not in this wonderful performance :)

The address is the same as for the Foundation:
http://autoimmunityresearch.org/contact.html

I would be very grateful if you can find me a DVD. PAL is fine by me (or Betacam or any other format :))

Anything by Bob Dylan, but especially his later in life sounds as I love how rich his voice has become.

Leonard Cohen, older stuff for the same reason.

Anything by Ozzie Osburne, but especially his later stuff.   Metallica.  Rob Thomas fills me with joy and his sound takes me to a spiritual place where writing is pure and totally fullfilling.

And if I want something peaceful, my recent love is Selwa by Choying Frolma and Steve Tibbetts which is Buddhist chanting with beautiful background music.

Disclaimer: I just read that this service is only available to folk living in the U.S.

OMG!!! I just learned about http://www.pandora.com/

You create your own radio stations based on the music you love. You can give a thumbs up or down to particular songs and artists. It's more sophisticated than some other similar types of services in that you can give a thumbs down to songs from one artist and that will prevent that artist from being played, but if you still like the artist and want other songs of that person played, you can add the artist to the station.

For example my Jane Monheit station contains the following seeds (seeds are artists that I add to try to either define the radio station or add variety):
Anita O'Day
Beth & April Stevens
Carmen McRae
Connie Evingson
Deanna Bogart
Deanna Witkowski
Diana Krall
Dinah Washington
Ella Fitzgerald
Etta James
Eva Cassidy
Flora Purim
Jane Monheit
John Butler Trio
Julie London
Lena Horne
Linda Ronstadt & The Nelson Riddle Orchestra
Morgana King
Peggy Lee
Sarah Vaughan
Stacey Kent

I've created 23 stations to try to capture particular sounds that I like. If you provide a description to your radio station (which you can give any name to once you've created it in an artist's name by editing the title), then it can be included as part of online suggestions for other people.

At any rate, I've been having a blast because the radio stations also play similar artists and so you can discover new or rediscover old artists that you like. Also, you can save favorites to hear whenever you want.

It's a blast. I hope you enjoy.

Claire

P.S. You can also play your computer through your stereo or purchase Pandora supported radios and such (a future dream of mine) where you can listen to your own radio stations on separate devices (via computer networking...so your computer does not have to be stationed near the other electronic gear, ensuring computer privacy during parties, etc., and yet you can still do the thumbs up and down refining).

Lionel,

I just created a Vangelis radio station to listen to on Pandora so I can get a sense of what his music is like. Thanks for the tip!

I've been shy about sharing here, because my musical tastes don't normally coincide with others'. But since there's been such diversity here, I might as well FWIW and besides, most of the stuff I've found is MP budget friendly (free downloads offered by the artists with the Creative Commons license).

http://www.stadtgruenlabel.net/

I especially like Lomov's work, my favorite is Free Port.
