My husband has a new laptop for work and the monitor is incredibly bright...even for him. It is a Dell Latitude E5500. We can't find the settings to dim it. (We are Mac users normally.)

Can anyone guide us to dimming this?

I recall reading this about a year ago in a post from Trevor, but can't find the info now when I need it. Any Dell expert wisdom would be appreciated here!!

Michele

Hi Michelle,

Try holding down the Fn button and using the up/down arrows - or the left/right arrows.  For example, on my Dell Extensa, Fn with left arrow = dimmer, Fn with right arrow = brighter.

 Hope this helps

Pipistrelle,

Thanks for you quick response! It does work on his Dell model! Hurray!

Now I wish it would go dimmer!! But every little bit helps!

I just received a new laptop (MacBook Pro) from my employer and it's monitor is much brigher than my old PowerBook G4 at it's comparable lowest setting. Bummer!

Thanks again!
Michele

I've also swapped round the text and background so that text is white and background is black.

If you want to do this, on the dropdown menu at the top left of the screen, select Tools then Internet Options

Under Appearance, click on Colors.

Change the color choices so that Text is either white or yellow, and change Background to a dark color.

Click ok, when that box disappears click ok on the remaining box and it will disappear too.  Your display should then be a little easier on your eyes!

Morag,

I've sent your info to my hubby. He has yet to do it...but I took your advice and used it to let me know where to look in my new Mac.

In System Preferences under Display There were helpful options to change the display profile and color. It helped. I think the glossy screen is also an issue. But, great insights here that are helping a lot!

Thanks again!
Michele

Michele, I can definitely relate. I just got a new MacPro and the glossy screen caused too much reflection this afternoon and before I took care of myself I had too much glare and had to go take a two hour dark break.  Other than that, I can tolerate the lowest brightness setting most of the time.  However, I think I will take a look at Display under System preferences.  Claire

On the dock of your Mac (at the bottom of the screen), you should have an icon entitled "system preferences" (it's the one that looks like a cog). While I didn't find anything in display that made the screen better for me (I'm pretty happy with it the way it is), I'm sure you've found the brightness lights by now at the top (function keys 1 and 2). I have just been investigating everything on the dock and everything in the system preferences to see what I might want to change. Hope this helps, Claire

Perhaps we ought to start a MacPro thread!  Claire

Good idea....MacPro thread, that is. I have diddled around with display under system preferences, but, quite frankly, it is too complicated for me to really grasp. The selections offered are more color oriented and the choices are limited, unless I'm missing something. If anyone has figured out how to make the screen dimmer (other than the brightness keys) please let me know.

Aunt Diana,

I can only think of going to System Preferences, then clicking on Universal Access. From there, one can select white text on black. The main problem being that images or pictures show up as  negatives. However, this option is easier for some people and I've used it in the past when I didn't care about the images.

If you want to look at pics, although a pain, it's easy and quick enough to make the switch back to normal.

Michele, the MacBook Pros are definitely brighter than the PowerBook G4's. However, they do both have their dimming limits.

One problem w/the Macs is that the keyboards don't always stay lit, even in dim lighting when they're supposed to. With NoIRs on, this makes it almost impossible to see the keyboard.

Solution? Lab Tick. http://labtick.proculo.de/.  This software keeps your keyboard bright whenever you'd like, so you can wear your glasses AND see the keyboard. It's freeware, but donations are nice.  I've used this nicely for quite a while.

Hope this helps someone...Alayne

Thank you Alayne.
I tried the white on black and find it a bit weird. I guess I just have to get used to this new screen. Part of the problem is the screen is twice the size of my last screen.....I hadn't realized how much more light that would mean.

I was able to stop wearing NoIRs with my computer and just may have to go back to using 40%. Or I'll try someone's--Katzzz suggestion?--to hang a piece of window film over it. I have some and could tape it on to the frame to see if that would work. It would be a pain to have to wear my NoIRs inside just for the computer.

Claire

P.S. I had to turn off the key lights because they are too bright.
