Quote from Paul Newman...won't he be missed??

I'd like to be remembered as a guy who tried - who tried to be part of his times, tried to help people communicate with one another, tried to find some decency in his own life, tried to extend himself as a human being. Someone who isn't complacent, who doesn't cop out.

I've been trying to make a concious effort to get my personal emailed cleaned up---Of course, I have to open up and read old emails, just in case they need to be saved--Pack Rat that I am-- but see why I save things, I loved this quote! Wow, does this ever describe how I sometimes feel, trying to push my wellness to bloom faster than it is destined!

When we were created the blueprint of our lives was set at that time, attempting to rush lifes schedule based on our own timetable is like tugging on an emerging tulip shoot, insisting you must have the flower right now!!

Deb,

What you wrote reminds me of the self esteem issues that we with chronic illness sometimes face...blaming our illness on something we did or didn't do or some psychological failing...you know all those communications that come from us from cultures totally focused on production as value.

At any rate, it occurred to me that a rose bush to bloom well needs not only good stock (something it is not in charge of), good soil, good light, the right amount of rain, good luck (lack of mold, etc.).  However, a rose, even if from good stock planted in poor soil with bad lighting will not do well.  That bush planted in a spot not conducive to good health does not go around going, "Woe is me, I'm not a rose bush, I'm such a poor specimen, what a rotten job I've done of it."  The rose bush doesn't do that even if it never produces a bloom.  But that's what we humans do.

One thing I've realized: I'm a rose and no one needs to tell me that and now I no longer worry about that bloom.  A rose bush is a rose bush is a rose bush.

Claire

Said to Maise Dobbs in the book by the same name (current and 2nd book for fiction book club) by Jacqueline Winspear:

"The extraordinary hides behind the camouflage of the ordinary.  Assume nothing...."

It occurs to me that the opposite can also be true....

The ordinary can hide behind the camouflage of the extraordinatry.  Assume nothing....

Good advice either way.

Another great piece of instruction to Maise Dobbs (see above):

"Truth walks toward us on the paths of our questions....  As soon as you think you have the answer, you have closed the path and may miss vital new information.  Wait awhile in the stillness, and do not rush to conclusions, no matter how uncomfortable the unknowing."

Waiting awhile in the stillness reminds me of the Transylvania hymn entitled "Find the Stillness."  One of my all time favorites!  Unfortunately with my Th1 addled mind I can only remember, "Find the stillness, know the stillness, let the stillness carry me."  (And the last line: "I will find true harmony.")  I'd appreciated anyone who knows the lyrics to actually post or send them to me via PM.

Claire

Find a Stillness

Find a stillness, hold a stillness, let the stillness carry me
Find the silence, hold the silence, let the silence carry me
In the spirit, by the spirit, with the spirit giving power,
I will find true harmony

Seek the essence, hold the essence, let the essence carry me
Let me flower, help me flower, watch me flower, carry me
In the spirit, by the spirit, with the spirit giving power
I will find true harmony.

Yes Jan!!!  Well, I was wrong about the beginning.  However, I have the tune, which I adore, burned into my memory and now I can sing it again.

Thank you so much for finding that.  I searched the Internet but couldn't find it.

Yeah!!!

Claire..

Hi Claire,

At first I typed in the whole first line that you gave and didn't get much, but one thing led me to think the title was just the first part---Find a Stillness---and that worked.  I even found one site that let me play part of the song so I got to hear it sung.  It really is a beautiful song.

I had a song in my head once that bugged me for years.  It was a song out of my past somehow, but I couldn't put my finger on it.  I only had two lines that I could remember.  The first line was, "I like to dance and tap my feet but they won't stay in rhythm"  and another couple lines, "Ho hum the tune is dumb, the words don't mean a thing.  Isn't this a silly song for anyone to sing".   I kept thinking I must have danced to it in a dance recital when I was little, and only took lessons for one year. I asked my friends from school (at a class reunion) and nobody knew what it was.  Finally, when I got my first computer, I experimented one day and typed in the first line of the lyrics.  Lo and behold, up popped many sites that gave me the whole song.  It is called "The Dwarf's Yodel Song" from "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs".  I'm still not sure if it was a tune from our recital, but at least I now know where it came from.

Jan

Hey Jan,

I'm glad you found your song.  Little refrains can bother us like that.  I once came across a McGuffy Reader in an antique shope (is that how you spell the name?) and realized that's where I got the phrase I could not forget: "said the spider to the fly."  (Yes, my childhood has been reduced to relic status.)

I don't know the words used to describe music, but I love the pacing of the tune of this song, particularly the way the word "carry" is propelled quickly and yet with a hinge in it.  Really do wish I had the words to describe what I mean.  The tune might be Transylvania, however, it reminds me of many tunes out of the Jewish tradition, which have always spoken to me.

Thanks again.  Claire...

Oh Claire, I think childhoods are pure magic.  I love reading about people's childhoods and right now I'm knee-deep in family history, trying to organize all the writings and pictures my mother left.  In a round about way I'm now living in the small town I grew up in and there is a book about to be published of the town's history, so I've been going through my mother's slides (about 3,000) and pictures for the book.  My folks lived here from 1931 until they died, my dad at 91 and my mom at 98, and had a part in it's history during those years.

I've even been interviewed for the town's historical society, so what does that say about my status as a relic?  And just last week I got to go through the house I grew up in.  What memories.  I even left with probably the last remaining 3" piece of wallpaper from my old bedroom.

Speaking of childhood books, my mother had one that she called her Sweet Pea Primer.  She loved it so much she took it everywhere with her, including one unfortunate spot where it accidentally dropped down the other hole in the outhouse.  She was heartbroken.  Over the years she told that story to enough of us that a cousin remembered, and when she found a copy of what she thought might be the book in an antique store, she bought it for Mom.  It was the same book.  I have that little book today.

Treasure your memories,
Jan

Oh, What a cute story about the book.  I've packed away my childhood books making room for my friend, who came to live with me and care for me, to have an entire bookshelf to herself, and there is a set of books I cannot remember the name of (though I've looked at them every day of my life).  There were ten in the original set (all different colors, all different sorts of stories for girls and boys), and I left the 10th book in my 5th grade class and was too upset about it to tell my parents and so it was never retrieved (in my mind it is still in that classroom!)  So I have gone through life without that 10th book.  If I feel well enough to go up in the attic and find the name of the series, I'll post it here...just in case any of the folk who love to scour antique shops find the 10th book.  I'd love to have the complete series.

I also have my brother's copy of Robinson Caruso, which was given to him as a little boy by an Aunt.  I found it after he died.  Obviously, he was as sentimental as I...he even had his childhood passports and a passport that we both shared (I didn't even know that that used to happen--that children could share a passport--and wonder if that is true today).  Of course, I've now saved his passports, including his most recent and even his separation papers from the Navy back in the 70's after his Vietnam service.  He still had those.  I keep memories like this in my China cupboard along with the typical stuff and special pictures of loved ones.  It is such a mixed display...like those shadow boxes you see, except it is a much bigger version of that.

Also, when I was 26, I put together, after my father died, a two volume tribute/rememberance of my father and for whatever reason my mother took it apart over the years and it no longer exists.  I really miss that; it was such a labor of love.

You are right about treasuring memories.

Claire

Wow, ladies what lovely reading this just was.....thank you for sharing your personal memories...my Grandpa used to sing one years ago to my mom, which she in turn used to sing to us....and then I in turn taught my children....I have not thought of this song in years...until now, it was called....Mr. Frog Went a Courtin'....It's a great whimsical kind of song...how Mr. Frog courts a mouse...the fun thing always was, until we were old enough to remember all the words, even the youngest children would always pipe in at the uh huh part!!

Mr. Frog went a courtin and he did ride, uh huh, uh huh,

Mr. Frog went a courtin and he did ride, with his sword and his pistol by his side, uh huh, uh huh.

He went right to Miss Mousies' den, uh huh, uh huh,

He went right to Miss Mousies' den and he said Miss Mousie are you within? uh huh, uh huh.

He sat Miss Mousie upon his knee, uh huh, uh huh,

He sat Miss Mousie upon his knee and he said Miss Mousie will you marry me, uh huh, uh huh.

I will not without my fathers consent, uh huh, uh huh

I will not without my fathers consent, would not marry the President, uh huh, uh huh.

Mr. Rattie laughed and shook his sides, uh huh, uh huh,

Mr. Rattie laughed and shook his sides, to think his daughter would be the bride, uh huh, uh huh.

Now where shall the wedding supper be, uh huh, uh huh

Now where shall the wedding supper be, way down yonder in the hollow tree, uh huh, uh huh.

Now the first came in was Mr. Bug, uh huh, uh huh,

Now the first came in was Mr. Bug and passed around the whiskey jug, uh huh, uh huh.

Next came in was Mr. Bee uh huh, uh huh,

Next came in was Mr. Bee and he tuned his fiddle upon his knee, uh huh, uh huh.

Now the next came in was Mr. Tick, uh huh, uh huh,

Now this is the end of the wedding day and I have nothing more to say, uh huh, uh huh, uh huh!!!

So funny Deb.  I learned a similar yet different version from my Irish mother and there was no rat, no bug, no tick (guess because it was Ireland...different bugs), no whiskey--if you can believe it from the Irish version I learned (and vaguely remember).

I also remember a Mrs. Moth who came to set the tablecloth, uh huh.

I'll have to ask my mother and see if she remember her version of it.
