Elisabeth
re tacky- dark sheets.
I love pretty material/fabric. so I have some sparkly material in one room and other pretty prints in other rooms, for over the dark sheet, which is over the lighter drapes, which are over the blind and the tinted windows.
There are all sorts of inexpensive and pretty trinkets that can be hung over or glued on also..
Barb ... :)

Cool ideas Barb!

Maybe I should let my kids have at it for one of their homeschooling art projects?!? I'm sure they'd love that!

And yea, I'm doing the "layered look" too, but only 2; dark sheets over blinds! :)

Thanks. :)

Still working on it. It IS a process. :? No matter how much prep work and reading you do, there are surprises. Big ones. Not bad. Just surprises.

The things I thought would be challenges are less so. Then the things I thought I'd fly through are harder than I thought.

The gift of this process for me has been that I have witnessed the tolerance of people and have become more so myself.

Hang in there!

Hi Odette (Great signature!)

After your reading your post about "surprise", I remembered a post of mine from last year and I wanted to re-post it for you!

I was recently at a funeral of a friend and our priest talked about "Surprises"...in life, we have good surprises and bad surprises...our friend had passed suddenly with a heart attack at 56 and was buried on Christmas Eve...a bad surprise for his wife who found him...as I sat listening to the sermon I noticed a comparison with chronic illness recovery, like we all are going through...

...Some days we have good surprises that we associate with healing and making progress... and on other days we have the bad surprises which show themselves as herx, pain and doubt...yet even those "bad surprises"...are bringing us closer to wellness...I wish for all of you more and more "good surprises" in 2008!

Yes, Deb, surprises.

I woke this morning to hear that Bernie Mac has died. I had just read in the current issue of "People Magazine" (I confess I bought my first ever  because it had Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie on the cover and they are my hometown/New Orleans heros) that he was ailing with pneumonia and that it was unrelated to his sarcoidosis which was in remission.

I had been thinking that we needed to get a "name" on board with the MP. Well, sad that he has passed on. Here's a link to his obit which also has a link in it (which I've not yet read) that "Bernie Mac had sarcoidosis, but what is it?"

Oooh, I just read what the "Chicago Tribune" says about sarcoidosis, and it's not good. Anyone more knowledgeable want to write a letter to the editor? They are saying it is more prevalent in African-Americans, which Dr. Marshall pointed out is not true. Etc., etc.

Three questions, two about light exposure, one about milk.

1)  My lux meter arrived.  Yay!!!  So, the windows in my bedroom have blinds, sheer curtains, then heavy curtains in front.  I've draped a fairly heavy piece of material across the top of the curtain rods as light was leaking heavily there.  There are some leaks at the side edges (though I have velcro holding curtain to wall) and at the seams where curtains meet.

During the day, the lux meter reads zero in there unless I put it right up in the window where there is a seam and, depending on the size of the seam, it can read as much as 100.

So, if the meter reads 0, do I have to wear glasses and cover up because there is some natural light?

2)  When various people on different threads say they garden or go out to enjoy the outdoors at dusk or dawn, does that mean they can go somewhat less protected if the sun is below the horizon but there is still light?  I wouldn't think so, but I'm not sure how to read that.

3)  I use Woodstock Farms Organic Whole Milk that does not say added A & D, has 6% A and lists no D content.  I could buy Farmer's Creamery Reduced Fat (2%) that does not say added A & D, has 6% A, and lists "D = less than 2 % of daily value of D".

My question is, with both not having added A & D, and both having a value of 6% A, is it possible that the Woodstock Farms milk has a negligible amount of D in it but just doesn't list it?  If so, would I be better off getting the one that lists the negligible amount but is half the fat, since (I think) D is stored in fat?

I know these are so specific, but I want to get this right.

Thanks,
:)dette

I almost started a new thread:  The Grump Stump.  You know a place you can go and not have to sound positive but not have anyone come down on you for expressing negative stuff.  But I'll bury my gripes right here.  :X

I've just returned from the student union at the university where I work.  I was hungry.  I'm still hungry.  There's nothing, out of all the offerings, that I can eat there.  OK, so they were out of apples and I COULD get a dry salad.  Arrrrrrg!!!  No pasta, no pizza, no sammies, no burgers, no Chinese, no Mexican, no 'Merican.

Reeeeeally frustrated.  I'm avoiding bringing my own lunch because I found out the bread I was using had 2% folate.  I can't even bring a dang sandwich.  I'm hungry and grumpy and frustrated.

... and having my 2nd cup of coffee for the day, that I shouldn't have, but it was the only semi-legal thing I could get to put in my stomach.

No folic acid in Pepperidge farm whole wheat bagels.  Easy.

:Pdette, I think you ought to start the Grump Stump thread.  It's a good idea.  And while you are at it, we should have a thread called the Pity Party.  There are times we just need to grump and times where we need to feel "poor pitiful me" and have friends who will pat us on the back and say "poor baby."  It's okay.  We all get there.

And because I'm silly...  here's my ode-ette to my lux meter!

                     Meter de Lux
My handheld lux meter arrived yesterday by mail.
Purchased on a tip from Dr. M, I got it on sale.
Typhoon Fung-Wong in Taiwan delayed it in post,
But now that it’s here, I’ll share what I like most.

It gives to me the confidence I need
To wander all through the house without heed.
My meter de lux, whom I’ve named Luz-cinda,
Tells me when I need darker shades on the winda’.

I hold her in front of me and follow the glow,
Her digital display indicates where I can and can’t go.
She’s revealed the nuance of early morning light,
And taught me the same spot in afternoon is too bright.

So now that I’m confident I’m MP compliant,
I’ll not have to be quite so NoIR reliant.

:cool:dette

Expate,

As distasteful as it might seem, large, heavy duty leaf garbage bags do just fine, you can mess 'em up and not feel bad about it. Not pretty, bring in more heat, but effective.

I used them in the summer and they do hold heat, could be nice for winter...

I also used window film by Gila that I got at Menard's.  It really cut down the glare and was the only thing I could do to fix the floor to ceiling sliding glass door where I was renting.

...although someone with chemical sensitivities who has trouble with soft plastics may find the heating of the black garbage or leaf bags causes them to off gas more....  Claire

And so, we see the need for an array of responses to MP demands.  All viewpoints welcomed and encouraged.

It's very "worked", ie it doesn't read well unless you read it well.  But it was a touch of fun.

On a serious note, I do appreciate having something, one thing, that is objective, that tells me yes, your light levels are OK, you are compliant, etc.

What the MP is teaching me goes beyond, out into the realms of art when we would crave science.  OK, I've had a glass too many of wine here, but what I mean, at the bottom of it all is that it's about creativity, thinking outside the box, a new paradigm, etc.

Arrrrg, how to find the common ground of creativity in science and art?

I'll stop here because I can't get it, but it does go to the very core of the questions we ask about the known and the unknown and how we approach that as scientists and artists and maybe where those two meet to inspire progress.
