For the first 6 months I wore fingerless mountain bike gloves for driving like this pair http://tinyurl.com/5bx4t5. I prefer to have my fingers exposed while driving and for the radio, mobile phone and such, but the rest of my hand is covered.

In my monster picture, I'm actually wearing fingerless gloves (which I got at sockdreams.com) over my leather driving gloves to cover the slight gap between them and my not quite long enough sleeves.

You know, I'd be fine with this covering up if I could just not wear the scarf over my face.  I just can't stand the thought of putting K cream on my face though.

Ladies,

I've seen many post who are Kohl's shoppers...Kohl's have just started bringing out their winter lines and have a few beautiful sweater and textured wraps!  One in particular looks like a cape that wraps. They are really classy looking, FYI!  I found these located near the hat and purse section.  Colors were black, tan, dark brown and red..I'm waiting for them to go on sale...! :D Deb

Thanks for the info Deb! I will have to check those out. I just love wraps and they come in so handy while on the MP, in so many different situations! I always wait for the sales, too and Kohl's usually gives good discounts.

Just wanted to mention that I've been seeing more and more women, and not just little old ladies, walking around with parasols. Could this be the start of a trend?:D Maybe it's just a southern thing? IMO a parasol would be just as much fun as a wrap!

Have I mentioned that I own two parasols:  one a sunbrella and one the most fantastic tie-dyed bamboo design I have ever seen and cannot wait to begin using again once I am through the MP!!!  Before the MP, I got all sorts of compliments on the tie-dyed parasol.  Yes, I experienced parasol envy by others!:D  Claire

I just did a little research and apparently, parasols are becoming very fashionable right now, from useless lace ones for weddings to totally practical ones with UV resistant fabric or a metalized coating. According to some of the pages I read it's the growing awareness of the dangers of sun exposure that's driving the resurgence.

Here's what I found so far wrt acquiring one:

http://www.sarasparasols.com/index.html
http://www.coolibar.com/04108.html
http://www.myeclipze.com/index.html

Traditional ones can be found in Asian shopping districts and websites, too.

eClaire, where did you get yours?

Hmmm...I didn't save the site for my sunbrella, but I did a lot of searching on the Net and found a little operation that had reasonably priced sunbrellas with all the bells and whistles (with a woman's name as the business name I think).  I'd still like to get one of the supersized ones for use in the future...even post MP.

As for the tie-dyed parasol, it was in the window of a boutique being used for decoration and I talked the owner into selling it to me.  I've never seen anything like its construction; it's unique compared to all I've seen on the Web and that, in part, is why I have experienced so much parasol envy from others.  I think that aside from this parasol being good looking, though, people have been recognizing that maybe being out in the direct sun all the time is not such a good thing.

Claire

I attended an outdoor wedding last weekend and received quite a few compliments on my outfit. Most people didn't know I was sun-sensitive.

Luckily it was the beginning of spring and near the ocean, so jackets were expected. I was determined not to wear all black, the colour of my usual sun gear.

I'm especially proud of two bits of this outfit: the gloves (eBay), which are vintage and have polka-dotted ribbon around the wrists, and the hat, which I bought for $7 and lined with Sunout fabric. I cut the Sunout fabric off the bottom of my kitchen curtain, which just happened to be too long and the right colour.

Honey,

Coco Chanel's life story was on Lifetime here in the states last night. Shirley MacLaine plays Coco in her later years. (It is on again tonight at 8 p.m. if anyone interested.  Quite good!)

Your fashionable outfit looks like one of Coco's famous designs and you are surely one of the Chanel fashion models!

The influential Chanel suit, launched in 1924, was an elegant outfit composed of a knee-length skirt paired with a trim, boxy jacket, traditionally made of woven wool with black trim and gold buttons and worn with large costume-pearl necklaces.

Chanel also popularized the little black dress which had a blank-slate versatility that allowed it to be worn for both day and night. The black Chanel dress was strapless, backless and more than a little risqué. It shocked the general public at large but quickly became a fashion sensation. The Chanel dress premiered in the third-ever edition of Playboy. This added to the controversy surrounding the Chanel name.

Much imitated over the years, Chanel's designs were manufactured across more price categories than any other in the high-fashion world. It was Chanel who also introduced costume jewelry to the fashion world, using a variety of accessories such as necklaces, chains or pearls of several strands. A bag with golden handles, an elegant pearl necklace, a tailored dress in black are the symbols of elegance and status that marked forever the history of fashion. But it was Chanel No. 5[3] - considered the number-one selling perfume in the world - which helped her become a millionaire. The perfume was created in 1921 by Ernest Beaux at the request of Chanel, who said that it was "a woman's perfume with the scent of woman." Its Art Deco bottle was incorporated into the permanent collection at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, New York, in 1959. Chanel No. 5 was the first synthetic perfume to take the name of a designer. One of her most famous quotes is, "This perfume is not just beautiful and fragrant. It contains my blood and sweat and a million broken dreams."

All her clothes were emblazoned with the famous Chanel symbol, the interlocking "C"s. This, however, was not her own design. The symbol was given to her by the owner of the Chateau de Cremat (a Chateau on the outskirts of Nice in the south of France). In 1923, she told Harper's Bazaar that "simplicity is the keynote of all true elegance." Chanel always kept the clothing she designed simple and comfortable and revealing. She took what were considered poor fabrics like jersey and upgraded them. She was instrumental in helping to design the image of the 1920s flapper, a "new breed" of young women who wore short skirts, bobbed their hair, listened to new jazz music, and flaunted their disdain for what was then considered acceptable behavior.

Thanks for the compliments, everyone! I bought the hat at TJ Maxx in California in July, so if you're in the States might be able to find one, too. My other (main) hat was $10 and came from a little shop down the road from here, so I have been pretty lucky. If you find a good hat, it makes all the difference.

When I first realised I was going to be seriously sun-sensitive, I decided to make the most of it. The look I'm going for is "glamorously conspicuous" - if you can't hide, you might as well give people something to look at. :)

My boyfriend says he hears people whispering about me when we're out and about, thinking I'm a movie star. I had a flight attendant tell me she thought I was a hand model she'd seen on Oprah. I definitely get stares, especially on public transport.

I saw these pages in a Fashion Week newspaper supplement earlier this year and laughed so hard because someone had obviously seen me around Melbourne and copied my style (kidding). I had to scan them and share.

I love how the title of the fashion spread is "from the shadows". Hilarious! And the hat looks like the one I wear most days.

And here's an ad from the same Fashion Week booklet. I love this picture - if only her chest and neck were covered, this would be the look I'm going for.

After seeing your photo, Honey, I did go oneline looking for hats.  I found this site:

 http://www.hatagories.com/?gclid=CMegw7eK3pUCFSj2QAodPmpGXQ

It has some gorgeous hats, including some "downbrims" like yours.  However, I am shocked at some of the prices.  I'm thinking I need to learn how to make/block hats.

:cool:dette

P.S.  I'm remembering a store in New Orleans, Yvonne LaFleur, where you can get custom made/decorated hats.

I promised someone a while ago that I would post here if the thread was started.  I only went out during daylight for the first time today so my partner took a photo of what I was wearing -

I'm no model and no good at posing.  Excuse the background mess.

The hat can be folded down so covered the sides of my face while in the car.  Zinc cream was also on my face (if anyone has suggestions on what to use to get that much off quickly please comment!  I can't stand it).

I have experimented before and found I am not all that sensitive to light which is why my lower face is not covered with a super high neck coat or similar -with my previous experiements, in the backyard, I had a thick scarf wrapped around my head under my hat.

I only go that jacket last week after searching online for ages.  It's completely opaque, faux leather (I choose not to wear real leather) and really comfy and most importantly (to me), still something I like wearing.

I only went in and out of shops, which had small sky lights, and a 5 minute drive.  But I did it finally :).

Nat

Natalie,

The hat and coat are gorgeous. So are you, for that matter. ;)

Personally, I just leave my face uncovered. I can't stand the zinc and my creepy looks when I used a scarf as face mask caused problems I didn't want to deal with. So, if it takes me longer or I am a bit more symptomatic, so be it.

But the most awesome bit of your news is that you got out and about!!! Congratulations!!!

That is so awesome! What great news. Love the hat. ;)

As for the Invisible Zinc, I only use a thinnish layer - the same amount as I'd use for face lotion or foundation. Never so much that it would need to be wiped off.

I usually wear the tinted stuff during the week and the untinted on the weekends (because it's cheaper). But I've found the untinted makes me look slightly paler in certain lights. The untinted makes me look fabulous, dahling, (especially if you add a bit of blush and lippy).

I apply it once in the morning and don't remove it until I'm getting ready for bed. Works for me, and I commute by car twice a day. I think you should give the tinted stuff (go for the light colour) a go, but just apply a little bit.
