I thought it might be helpful to start a list of NON-Vit. D items THAT WE'VE TRIED AND LIKED, including where we purchased them, as a resource for all of us.
Organic Vit. D FREE Milk - Brand Name - Organic Valley - Bought @ Trader Joe's
Vit. D FREE Butter - Land O Lakes Whipped Butter - Schnucks/Shop 'N Save

Good dairy sources...
Organic Pastures is a Fresno based dairy with lovely (and safe) raw milk from cows pastured on green grass all year 'round. (Grass fed means no soy feed means no added* hormones to pass along to us either. *milk, of course, does contain cow hormones.) Nothing added for sure. They ship UPS anywhere in the USA.
Strauss Family Creamery is a Marin County based dairy that doesn't seem to add anything and everything I've tried from them has tasted great. Their cows are mostly grass fed with some flax/soy intake, but not enough to worry over.
Do remember milk does naturally contain some *D* in it and I believe I remember that we should limit ourselves to a cup or less per day. (Don't ask if I cheat on this once in a while, please :--).
Applegate Farms has some nice cheeses. I enjoy the provolone almost daily. (They also take orders online.)
Almost all ice cream used to make me sick with the exception of Breyer's brand. A couple of years ago they were bought by another company and "natural flavorings" were added... I didn't do so well eating it (MSG is allowed to be labeled as "natural flavorings"). Then, later on, Breyer's was bought by Unilever and now I find can eat the strawberry flavor as it does *not* have *egg yolks* like the vanilla flavor does.
Of course their ice cream has *sugar* and we are cautioned to avoid that as much as possible while we are working to get well. (And we all know how bad *corn syrup* is right? ... I won't eat it!)
So, there is my 2 cents on the diary.

Here's the nutritional info on Bryer's All Natural: http://www.icecreamusa.com/products/product.cfm?u=77567-25420&b=1
I can't get it even for an ocassional treat because I am an absolute icecream addict and I'd lose control and consume it in large amounts. I'm afraid I am going to have to wait until I am well from the MP to start eating icecream again--that is, an ocassional icecream out (even if it has a little supplemental Vit D in it) just to avoid having it in the house and being tempted to consume all that sugar.

Claire,
Did you notice that they now only give you 1.5 quarts instead of half a gallon?
So they are helping you to binge 25% less!
Edit: I just saw you can get them in pints too... just share it with a friend and for a special treat and you should be 'good'. p.s. I just checked--the All natural vanilla does not have egg yolks--it's the French Vanilla that is the offender. Gotta read the labels!!!

Joyful,
Thanks for the tip about the pints of Bryers. Perhaps if I have a couple people over to dinner I can whip up a tiny dessert out of one of the pints. That way, it's gone and I've not consumed D. Also, if they keep the D out, in the future I could probably handle consuming a pint here or there on my own and not worry so much about eating 1/2 gallon, er, 1.5 quarts in a 24-48 hour period.

Claire, I am the same way (addictive) about peanut M&M's. I cannot eat just one or two, but find myself eating 1/2 to 3/4 of the bag at one sitting, so asked my husband not to buy them anymore; TOUGH!
Re: Ice Cream: we buy the Edy's Slow Churned Yogurt Blends and really like it. No Vit. D; Vit. A 2% (Vanilla anyway).
My sweet tooth is aching just typing all of this!

| A few years back(before I even knew about the MP) I was diagnosed with several food allergies/sensitivities. The most shocking being whey(there goes all my dairy) and eggs. I thought I was done with ice cream forever. After a desperate search for an alternative, I came across Luna & Larry's Coconut Bliss(coconutbliss.com). I thought I had died and gone to heaven. It comes in pints, and as with all my food, I eat it in moderation. Please read the ingredients for each flavor as some may not be as compliant as others. I eat mostly the Vanilla with an occasional crossover to the Cherry Amaretto. I actually couldn't even stand the smell of coconut before I had to change my diet a few years back. Now I enjoy the occasional indulgence. Strange how your tastes change as your body changes. I'm looking forward to the day when I can once again drink a glass of milk and have eggs for breakfast!

In one posting I noted that Joyce Waterhouse mentioned liking a Vit. D free (and all natural) skin care line called KABANA.
I found them online and ordered some of their products. I am pleased w/ them also.
For anyone interested their website address is: http://www.kabanaskincare.com

After an exhausting search into every butter, margarine and wheat flour product I could find including investigating organic "all natural" and kosher products in Canada I have found one single product that I suspect doesn't have any added D.
"Lactantia Provencal Garlic Butter" with 2% Vitamin A
I'm not sure why the A is so low on this product compared to other dairy?
The highest A content were all in Organic brands with one manf. averaging a whopping 10% Vit A.
I think it is possible that a lot of the Organic food here is supplemented and irradiated to kill bacteria which also increases the Vitamin D.

I am not pleased with Kabana. I find my sunscreen to be incredibly greasy. I would need to shower every day to get the grease that migrates up into my hair out, and I really only have the energy to shower once a week to wash my hair (the tub is more my speed).
I am using "Green Screen SPF 15" with 20% zinc. Are people who like it using something different? If so, what?

I'm from Australia as most know/can see, so these are some Australian suggestions.
I wanted to add Norganic Cereals. I can't speak for their other products but here in Australia just about all cereal has added folate - not these! No 'sugar' either (fructose, yes). The Apple & Cinnamon Crunch is really good.
Jalna Berry Fruit Yoghourt is also great (if you like yoghourt) and easy on my stomach - no added sugar, no articifial sweeteners, no fat, no D etc... be weary that yoghourt affects some people on the MP strangely though.
Burgen Rye for Digestive Health Bread (has a low GI symbol on the packet) is the most MP friendly supermarket-bought bread I have found (well actually, it was recommended to me) - and it tastes good!
Also look at Baba Ganoush (in the dip aisle). Really tasty, never fortified or filled with anything we can't touch and goes well on all sorts of things... probably very easy to make as it seems to consist of 6 ingredients.
All the products I mentioned above were bought at Coles supermarket.
Also, if you're near a store, I couldn't recommend Macro Whole Foods more highely. Of course not everything in there is MP friendly (far from it), but there's a good selection of, well eveything, and it's a fun place to explore .

Hello Claire,
I too use the Kabana sunscreen..Give the SPF 20 a try. It has no Lanolin in it...that is what makes the SPF 15 more greasey.
I was using the SPF 20 and thought it didn't spread very far and was a little too runny, as the first ingredient is water..so I ordered some SPF 15 (as recommended by Eric at Kabana), as he said the SPF 15 is more moisturizing with the Lanolin in it...I just got my SPF 15 and while it is more moisturizing, I don't like the smell of the Lanolin, which comes from Sheeps I believe...
So I have decided to continue with the SPF 20 and just put some of my own moisturizer on first, before I apply the SPF 20. Hope this helps..
I want to know a little more about the forum for Singletons.I will post my questions in a different thread...
Cheers,
Lisa

Now that Lisa mentioned it...
Does anybody remember reading somewhere that the lanolin naturally has some Vit D in it?

| Thank you Lisa. I didn't notice the lanolin. That might also explain why I feel not well when I use it; I'm allergic to the smell of wool (it's the lanolin). I will try the 20 spf with moisturizer under it. Claire

Here's an interesting site that Meg has posted under the MP Essential Info. I've also found similar sites like http://www.myfooddiary.com (this one costs though per month). These will allow you to input your daily food intake and automatically calculate the % of vitamins, calories, fat etc.
A website to help you keep track of nutrients
It isn't necessary, but for those you like to detail their diet, here is a device that should help.
I am using CRON-O-Meter ( http://spaz.ca/cronometer ), a good free nutritional software tool that monitors intake of macronutrients as well as vitamins and minerals. I thought this might be useful for people who wish to monitor their intake of vitamin D and folate. It requires a bit of effort to put in everything one eats, but it may be well worth the effort. It's also likely more useful to people living in the U.S. as it comes with the USDA database, which obviously focuses on U.S. food items. ~Francois

| I think I know the answer to this question, but I assume it is NOT ok to use a topical aloe based moisturizing cream if it has Vit D in it? My son spotted this Infinite Aloe Skin Care Cream at our state fair that helps arthritis by supposedly dialating capillaries in your skin thus reducing inflammation. Very sweet of my son to think of me so I bought a jar, but read the label thoroughly AFTER I got home. Vit A & D are listed among many other ingredients. Any confirmation is appreciated.

| I also discovered that one of the main ingredients in the organic lip balm I use is sunflower oil. I understand that has vitamin D in it. Probably not a good idea.

Hi wind flower,
Toni D had posted the following in the Members Forum, thought all may find of interest for this current thread! Deb
Recently, I was informed to change my mouthwash, as it had too many oils present in the ingredients. Did not think much about personal items containing D (lotions, face. creams, cleansers, mouthwash, gargles). Our skin is our largest organ and must be protected, as well.
I'm in the process of checking my products out now. I've found the foaming gel that I use to cleanse my face and neck has FD&C yellow #5 and D&C red #33. I think the #5 is a no-no in our food list. Some of the other ingredients are not that easy to decipher though, the chemical names and all, without becoming mini scientists .
I'm looking at my hair products next. Can only do so much at one time. It took me a while to find products that I didn't react to, or think I reacted to, pre MP. I've always had sensitivites (environment and food) and worked diligently at finding product I could use. I wash my hair every day and I know my hair product contain different oils. I'll probably go on the company's site this weekend or email them to see if anything contains D.
There's always something to do. But it's a good thing because otherwise we would never know, especially if we continue to have issues with D being introduced
