I have used hard wheat berries and made them into flour in about 1 minute using a Vitamix. Once it is flour, you add your other ingredients and it totally makes your dough, no hand mixing or mess.

The vitamix is a bit pricey but I use my EVERY DAY. I love it.

There a video on the vitamix site showing how they make the flour then the bread.

Price wise, it comes out to almost the same price, from what I can remember. But it is so easy to just make the flour as you need it, and it seems just healthier, having it made right before you eyes, not somewhere else and sitting in a bag for months on end.

Also a pound of wheat berries will give you more than one pound of flour, I believe.  It's been a while since I did any, but that's what I recall.

You can use the vitamix for so many other things, that it's totally worth it to have, soup, salad dressings, green smoothies, juicing, fruit smoothies, salsas, grinding flaxseeds and nuts (even coffee beans), ice cream, frozen yogurt, frozen fruit "ice cream,' etc.  It's super easy to clean up, and that's one of the main reasons I use it so much.

Here's the demo about grinding grains:

Thanks Goobygirl!   I had a chance to buy a Vitamix several years ago (really cheap) but passed it up because I didn't have the money:( Oh well..........I always keep my eyes open for one.

Carol,

I find that the vitamix (which I have had ten years now) is a real time saver. It also saves money because you can use the whole food. For example, when juicing an apple, I put everything in but the stem. If something has too much fiber, you can always strain it. Another example, oranges or other citrus, you don't waste the white around the fruit, it gets totally blended (has lots of nutrients). Same with watermelon rind and seeded grapes. The seeds in the grapes completely blend. With a regular juicer, you usually have a lot of waste. I waste nothing with the vitamix, and if I do have something that has too much pulp, I just strain it and put in the dogs' food.

You can also get a reconditioned vitamix, for less. I have both the wet blade container (for wet foods) and the dry blade (for making flour, bread dough, chopping herbs, coffee grinding).

It really will replace about 10 of your other appliances. I rarely use the food processor, one because it is so hard to clean, and two a pain to use. The vitamix you fill with some warm water and a drop of soap, turn on, and it's clean.

With the medical issues we have, having something that makes our lives easier is very worth it.

PS: the vitamix recipe for bread has these conversions for wheat berries to flour:

1 3/4 cups whole kernel wheat or 2 1/2 cups whole wheat flour

Online, I found wheat berries for about 0.50/lb ($1.04 / 2lbs). When I just bought whole wheat flour last week at the grocery store, it was about $1/lb.

Considering that you get more flour from the berry, and it's cheaper per pound, I'd say wheat berries are the way to go.

You can also make your own flax meal, nut meals, and nut butters with the Vitamix (think almond butter, macadamia butter, yum)/

Carol,

I haven't succeeded at making my own bread very well, but maybe someday!

I have liked Arrowhead Mills for a quality product when I did try baking bread. They used to sell their own line of breads too.

Here is one place that offers free-standing grain mills (and organic whole grains)... HouseholdTraditions.com.

I think the attachment for your mixer is a better value (less stuff to store too). :)

Edit: Decided to take a look at vitamix again on gg's recomendation. They do sell reconditioned models for $379. One review explains why they only get a 4/5 rating from a former dealer here. I think I will get one someday when the budget isn't so tight. :P

hi natalie,

thanks for the tips.

though i guess we have to go easy on the baba ganoush as main ingredients are eggplant (chlorogenic acid=immunosuppresant) and garlic (natural antibiotic/bacterial= increased IP/ herxing for some).

...so while yummy... as elmo would say... "it's a sometimes food"... :)

DWD - I agree, but I just spread it on small pieces of friendly bread.  I think if I ate it by the tablespoon no one would come near me for a week, haha.

I don't actually know if they keep the skins ont he eggplants making baba ganoush.  I doubnt it says it on the label either.

Elmo's hilarious when he's on Rove!

Oh, I just saw that I wrote flaxmeal in my previous post (sorry folks, a no no on the MP).

Also, baba does not use the skin of the eggplant.

I read the review of the vitamix and can't really agree. I have had it for ten years. I have the separate container for dry chopping (like flour) and have never had an issue. Nothing has ever broke.

I like it for a juicer. I mean, you will have to strain any pulp, if it bothers you, it is not like juicing a vegetable or fruit in a centrifugal juicer. But then again, if you want nutrients from the pulp, and the fiber, you will get it this way.

I have never had the machine break down, or have had to send it back. I haven't even replaced the container. To me, it's a total workhorse. Next time you go to a bar, look at what they use for a blender. Most times, it's a commercial vitamix.

I use it to chop vegetables too, you just drop in the veggies while the blades are spinning. I can do a carrot in about 3 seconds. Making toppings for salads is simple because you just throw it in, and clean up is super easy.

You can even shred cheese, but I've never tried.

Anyhow, it's just my opinion, but I really don't agree with the epinions poster.

Hello Everyone,

My daughter is gradually making changes in her family's diet.  I was just wondering if anyone has any input on a product called "Organic SoDelicious non-dairy frozen dessert."  She's putting a scoop full on the kids oatmeal for breakfast instead of ice cream.  My concern is that it contains soy which is a no-no as far as our MP diet, but she's having a challenge finding ice-cream without whole egg or just an ice-cream substitute in a vanilla flavor.

The Organic SoDelicious contains: organic soymilk; filtered water; organic soybean; organic brown rice syrup and/or organic tapioca syrup; dehydrated can juice; organic soybean oil and/or safflower oil; chicory root extract; vanilla extract; carob bean gum; non-GMO potato sugar; carrageenan; natural flavors.

Any feedback would be appreciated.  Hope all is well with everyone!  Feel good and be blessed.

Toni - I am hugely against eating non fermented soy products and feel even stronger about feeding them to children so I may be biased here.  I am allergic to whey, eggs and sugar so my search for ice cream was a desperate one.  The only product that meets my needs and makes me feel like I'm actually consuming something healthy is at this website:  http://www.coconutbliss.com/   Not sure where your daughter lives but they do ship overnight to the eastern states.  I mostly eat the Vanilla Island flavor and it is so yummy and creamy.  Just remember, everything in moderation, and be sure to check that whatever flavor you get has ingredients that are MP compliant.

Thank you, Karna.  I just read their site and I might want to try some myself first and then order for them:D.  Definitely have to stick with the Coconut Bliss though as the real ice cream has the egg yolk:X.  Thanks again!

On the subject of coconut ,  I just recently bought some 'Burts Bees' lip and hand creme.  One lip balm  (in a little tin) is beeswax with coconut oil as first ingred.   Should I be concerned about vita D here?

The beeswax lip balm (stick) ingredients are beeswax, coconut oil, and sunflower seed oil, in that order, so I did stop using that on account of the sunflower oil.

The beeswax hand creme has almond oil as first ingred , then cera alba, aloe leaf juice, kaolin, grapefruit seed extract, and a few more, but those are the main ones in order,  has an almond fragrance, nice.   Is there any problem with these ingredients??

Thanks guys and gals,  I really appreciated this forum

Heather

HeatherK,  I get really confused about ingredients in my body care products.  I try to use only products with ingredients I can actually read and pronounce!  I stopped using a couple of Burt's Bees products because of the sunflower oil and other unsure ingredients.  I now use the cream, lotion and lip balm at tropicaltraditions.com.  I use the unscented cream for my face(also great for dry skin patches/rashes) and the citrus lotion for my body.  I emailed them and they assured me there were no sources of vitamin D in these products.  The lip balm only has three ingredients:  coconut oil, palm oil and beeswax.  Because of the very natural and limited ingredients in their products they take a minute or so to soak into your skin but they are very moisturizing.  It took me a couple of uses to get use to the "natural" smell but now I love it and hardly notice it.  There is also a company in Canada(loveatfirsttouch.com) that I used to get lotions from.  The citrus hand and body lotion is wonderful(and MP compliant) but their face lotions have avocado oil and a couple other things that made me nervous.  The only reason I don't use their body lotion now is how far away and expensive it is to have it shipped to me.

I remember reading a while ago about dried milk products without Vit. d. Does anyone know of a company that make this?

Diana, I used to get Organic Valley's Nonfat Skim Milk Powder and Buttermilk Powder. At the time I understood it did NOT contain supplemental Vit D.

Now the site states that because low/non-fat milk products lose much of their Vit D, due to it being a fat soluble vitamin, they are required to supplement somewhat.

Here's a direct quote from the site that might mean there's not too much added.  An email enquiry will get a more definitive answer as to D levels.
We do not fortify our powdered milk with Vitamins A or D above what may naturally occur.
If it has the Vit D content of natural whole milk, it might not be too high for some MPers?? I don't know. My DH and I drink raw whole milk and eat raw butter and raw whole fat cheese. (We eat plenty of other things too. :)) The high fat content has seemingly never raised our D levels.  This "normal D level" may, however, not work for some.

Cheers,
Alayne
