Thanks Toni, but I don't buy any skinny clothes when I'm skinny as (1) I have plenty of supply from my pre-sick days (2) I know being skinny won't last / is only short lived.  I have had to buy larger sizes as I've put on weight.  So now I have quite a large wadrobe as it covers skinny-medium-and-over-weight-sizes for me.  So my approach is similar to Greg's: "Regarding clothes I hang on to the skinny and fat clothes.  Then I just wear what fits!"

Greg - Agree with your comments on at times not being able to cook and plan ahead.  During these times I rely on store-bought stuff too.

I couldn't agree with you more r.e. your following comment, it sums up perfectly exactly how I feel too!: "The bottom line is that on top of the grind of the MP, I hate getting fat". Absolutely!

cheers, k

Goyop,
I've experienced the exact same thing. There are times when the only thing I can tolerate to swallow is grilled cheese. I really don't worry too much about the carb thing. I'm very pleased with my progress and my eating habits are not all they're supposed to be. (Although, I am a cook so I make most everything that we eat from scratch.. and I'm very finicky as to what food items I buy.
One of my favorite and very easy to make is cream of leek soup. It is bland but delicious and on those days that my stomach is acting up it is very soothing.
Recipe is simple: Wash and dice the white part only of three leeks. Saute in some butter & oil (2tbsp) til soft, don't let them get brown. Sprinkle a few tablespoons of flour and continue cooking for another minute stirring. Then add 4 cups low salt chicken broth, bring to a boil and simmer for 15 min.
Right before serving add some heavy cream (to your taste) and pepper. You can add croutons if you like or a dollop of sour cream.
With some crusty french rolls this is one of my favorite comfort foods.

I'm going to deal with my weight when I consider myself cured...for now I'm just happy to be feeling decent.

Diana,

That leek soup sounds great.  You really are a chef.

I have a question for you, you mention feeling decent.  I looked through your posts for a while but my brain stopped working.  Could you briefly tell me what improvements you have seen?  I could use a little inspiration.

Thanks,

Greg

I wish I had made a list of all my problems at the start, bus, alas I did not. As the symptoms fall away it is hard to even remember you once had them...but I'll do my best. Myriads of little things have improved.

The first really exciting thing I noticed was about the 1 year point when I realized I could read again and retain what I was reading. I had not been able to do this for 20 years.
Second thing I noticed was my gums....I had always had periodental disease and bad teeth. Have spent an absolute fortune on dentists...all of a sudden, I have the healthiest gums in town. They have even grown back in the areas that they had started receding.
I used to have bad vertigo attacks...they've gone entirely.
Floaters in my eyes have been gone for a long time.
A numb area in my leg has become "un_numb".
My hair is starting to come in brown rather than grey.
My personality has come back (when I'm not herxing)...I am much perkier and can carry on a conversation again.
I can do multiple things at the same time...for years I could barely handle one thing at a time.
Physically I am much more flexible...I can squat and kneel and get up again withouit even thinking about it.
Oh....the biggest thiing of all....sleep. I can fall asleep without sleep meds, I can doze and take naps and I wake up feeling refreshed. I started relying on sleep meds in my late teens....I couild not fall asleep without taking something and it was getting to the point that I would have to take several doses and still I would wake up an ;hour later....it was awful because I was always exhausted.
The skin on the back of my hands and my neckline area has gotten much softer and there seems to be a new layer of fat underneath. This skin had been red and irritated for years and is now like baby skin.

I'm afraid I just can't thing of any more things right now except to say I feel ALIVE again...where I had been a shadow of myself for years.
I had many a moment when I worried about whether this would work for me....that is only natural. It has worked and it continues to do so ...every time I doubted I remembered the "science" and realized that it just made so much sense that it woiuld have to work for me.

I'm sure there are many other things that I have forgotten...the real proof is that my husband wants to do this too, after seeing what has happened to me.
I hope this has helped.

Diana,

Thank you for taking the time to share all of this.  I would think just writing the list would be an encouragement to you.  Wow!

As for me, it is an encouragement as well to hear this.  I am more or less half way into the woods and tired.  I have seen improvement in the herx symptoms but not much relief to the disease symptoms and some things are worse.  So now is the worst time for me.  Fat, diseased, and brain fogged is no way to go through life.

I do believe in the science and know of others who have been more or less cured by the protocol.  This is just a tough stretch after many years of dealing with the illnesses.

Thanks to all.  And sorry to turn the food thread into something else.

Greg

Saw the mayonnaise thread here. This is easy to make, no eggs, and you will be "addicted" to it, I can promise you, it is sooooo gooood. I use more garlic and olive oil instead of safflower oil. No matter what, I try to use cold pressed oils (and of course, no sunflower oil).

 Diamond'S Almondaise

Ingredients

    1/2 c  blanched almonds
    1/2 c  distilled water
      1    dash cayenne (optional)
      1    fresh ground pepper to
      1    taste
      1 sm sliver garlic
    1/2 ts sea salt (optional)
    1/2 ts spike
      2 c  to 3 c safflower oil
2 tb to 3 tb fresh lemon juice

Instructions

Place blanched almonds and water in blender and blend on high until a
thick cream forms. If blender refuses to turn, add 1 to 2 Tb water
until blade moves freely. Add garlic, sea salt, lemon juice and
pepper. Blend briefly. Remove center plug from top of blender and,
while blender is on high, slowly drizzle oil into cream mixture. When
mixture refuses to accept any more oil, the oil will sit in a bubble
on top of almondaise. At this point, remove the lid and continue to
add oil in a thin stream, beating shallowly with a spoon so that you
do not hit the moving blade. This will force more oil into the
mixture and make a thicker product. Final consistency should be
between that of mayonaise and whipped cream cheese. Store in a
covered glass container in the refrigerator. Almondaise keeps for at
least a week (if it hasn't been used up!) Yields 3 to 4 cups.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION; As in the making of all mayonaises, certain
basics apply in this procedure. First of all, ALL the ingredients
MUST be at room temperature. Secondly it is necessary to carefully
observe the indicated amounts. And last, oil should be added in a
thin, fine stream and very slowly.

Almonds can be blanched ahead of time and stored in the refrigerator
in water for a day or two. REMEMBER to bring them to room temperature
before using them.

If you occasionally have a "failure" don't worry about it. Sometimes
too much moisture in the atmosphere interferes with the
emulsification process.

OMG, that recipe looks awesome.  Way better than "veganaise".  I will say that I need to get back to some things I did when I was on Weight Watchers once.  Since I "couldn't" have regular Mayo  and didn't go for low fat, I made a sandwich spread of roasted eggplant, onion, and garlic (drizzled in olive oil) that I processed in the blender.  It made a wonderful sandwhich spread.  Plus, you could switch round and use roasted red pepper or whatever in place of eggplant.

Yum,
:cool:dette

Oh yeah the almondaise is so good, you can use it for dips, a spread, just try to keep yourself from spooning it directly from the jar into your mouth. ha ha!

I am seeking suggestions for milk without Vitamin D added.

I tried Strauss family dairy when I first started MP, but it made my D25 go up.  However, I was drinking it by the glass, which I now realize is not wise.

I use maybe 8 oz. per day and want to cut down on the fat content from good ole' half&half.

Thanks again,

Sherry

Sherry,

I drink the milk from Organic Pastures based in Fresno, CA. If a local store doesn't carry their milk, you can order it direct from the dairy.

     See this page: http://www.organicpastures.com/shop.html

They keep their cows healthy using a simple idea: leave them in the pasture living only on green grass. They drive a semi-truck "milking parlor" into the fields to milk the cows and the milk is immediately chilled to 35 degrees right in the field.

Because of the prevailing hostile attitude to raw milk, the results of testing each batch of milk used to be posted on their website (not sure if they still do that). You might find this report: "9. What are pathogens? Have they ever been detected at OPDC?" of interest too.

Obviously no additives before or after the milk comes from the cows.
The milk actually has cream on top!

Hey All,

I just enjoyed the most delicious chocolate spelt cupcake from this bakery in NYC and since they have a delivery option, thought I would share their site on this thread.  Gluten-free, soy-free, egg free, etc.  Check it out.

That is a great website Toni D.  Very informative about the ingredients they use.  Beware that they use sunflower oil in their frosting and in a couple of their other products(brownies and crumb cakes, I think).  Always looking for a yummy treat!

I just searched sunflower oil on their site and you're right.  I found a few items, including the frosting:X.  But there still seems to be more items that are okay than not.  The frosting did taste pretty good though on the cupcake ...but I didn't eat all of it anyway.  I shared it with two grands:).

I just think it's great to find a bakery at least trying to do the right thing in re ingredients, etc.  My daughter found it in her search for Kosher, gluten-free cupcakes for one of her children.

And now, an important question and personal observations on Dark Chocolate.

I used the "low carb" dark chocolate for quite some time, but then noticed if I ate a small portion about 3 days in a row, I couldn't sleep.  So...I discontinued it for a while, and sleep was okay.  However, i became concerned about the Malitol not being okay to consume, so I switched to real 'dark chocolate" and again monitored closely my consuption.  My ration is 2 squares a day, and I stick with it.  It does not cause any sleep problems that I am aware of; however, I now write asking for opinions of others.

Thanks in advance fellow MPers....

Sherry

I was trying to figure out where to post this link to a great site that gives you everything in certain foods..I feel it is great to search for vit d content (or any other content)....it names everything. Maybe seeing all contents (minerals & vitamins) will help you figure it out (what's bothering you).

http://www.whfoods.com

on the left side of the home page click on whfoods list....then under 1st chart click on food rating system....then scroll down to bottom of chart....and then click 'for in depth'. It names things I have never heard of in foods.

Looks like a great website, Barney.  I'm having trouble finding the "for in depth" link.  It's probably so obvious that I'm skipping right over it.

food is always fun to read about. I do not put much effort into my cooking, minimal effort at times. I have lost the appeite for food so it does not matter so much. I also run on a low budget so I do not by as much meat as I would like.

Breakfast: I eat yellow pea soup that I make myself from dried peas. Dried peas are very good to store at home and inexpensive.

Lunch: sometimes chicken, preferably fed on corn instead of the more industrial variant. Rarely I slice tomatoes in half put some herb on them, and then "bake" them in the owen. It tasts very good and is easy to do.

Dinner: sometimes a take out a package of green peas from the freezer and boil them. Then add sea salt and blend. It is also nice to eat chicken, green peas and lettuce, but because I lack energy I barely make it so far to. Sometimes i wok cabbage and herbs, and before I just to do a lot of pizza sallad from cabbage and eat it during the week.

Snacks: nuts, more green peas, raw carrots, sometimes peanutbutter.

I also like whipped cream which I add blueberries or raspberries to. It is jummy and easy to make but I try to avoid cream while on MP. But is a shame...
